Goro's Sushi

Site:
gorossushisa.com

This is the first sushi place we wanted to review for this
blog when we first started this back in July 2009.
They were closed on a Sunday when we went.
So we went and discovered another great sushi place called,
Fujiya.
Almost two years later and here we are.
This is located in San Antonio.
In this occasion, we had a group of us for the first time.
Within that group we decided to have our
first guest reviewer, Danny Garza.

The menu:

Now on to the sushi:

Stephanie Roll
Fresh salmon, crunches, avocado, cream cheese
a dash of chili sauce inside.
Wrapped with lots of fresh salmon
& some teriyaki sauce & more crunches.
Good flavor. It was one of the favorites.
The salmon gave it a nice finish.

U.T Roll
Inside – out roll with tuna, salmon, cream cheese
& avocado inside, wrapped with shrimp
topped with shredded crab, shrimp mixed
in special sauce with lots of crunches.
The cream cheese stood out here the most.
Went down easy.

Robo Roll
Spicy tuna & avocado deep fried quickly served piping hot.
This was the worst roll we tried this day.
Bland and didn't stand out.
Fry anything and it should be very good, except for this roll.
So, for the first time in this blog history,
we didn't like a deep fried roll as much.

Top: Las Vegas Roll
Inside out: Spicy crab with sesame seeds,
sweet fish powder boiled shrimp & avocado
They put seaweed on top of this and made
it seaweed heaven. Very good and crunchy.

Bottom: Spider Roll
Soft shell crab with cucumber, smelt roe and avocado.
Peppery and crunchy.
Nothing exciting.
Not the best spider roll we tasted.

In the back: A regular Philly Roll.
Fresh salmon, cucumber, avocado & cream cheese.
They put too much rice on here
and less cream cheese and avocado.
So another downer.

In the front: Eva Roll
Tempura shrimp, cream cheese & avocado
inside & boiled shrimp outside
topped with teriyaki sauce, spicy mayo,
crab salad & beef teriyaki.
This is the roll we came here for.
Very good and creamy.
The beef teriyaki on top gave it a good finish.
Another favorite.

Back: O Roll
Fresh salmon, crab, shrimp green scallions,
avocado, cream cheese & masago inside.
Salmon crab, shrimp, avocado,
outside topped with teriyaki sauce,
spicy mayo & special crab salad
This is the number one favorite of the group.
Love everything about it.
Messy but delicious.
Front: Three Amigos Roll
Fresh salmon, crab, shrimp green scallions,
avocado, cream cheese & masago inside.
Salmon crab, shrimp, avocado,
outside topped with teriyaki sauce,
spicy mayo & special crab salad
Another favorite from a few people from the group.

Bonus:

Goro's Sushi serves free delicious Miso Soup and
Salad.

Wasabi: Average.

Price: $6.95 - $14.95 per roll.

Comments:
On the low budget sushi side,
this is probably not the choice to go with.
But, trying something different is always good.
The sushi here are bigger than usual.
Loaded with lots of stuff.

Here's the Goro's Sushi June 2011 Crew:

So there you have it.
These few comments on this review are contributed
by everyone in this group.

Sushi Lovers, we'll see you next time in the next
sushi adventure.

Maki Toki

Site:
makitoki.com

Alright fellow sushi lovers, we got
a big surprise for you.
We always talked about an all you can eat sushi restaurant.
But, we've never heard or went to one.
That is, until tonight.
We went to Maki Toki located in North Austin (Braker and Metric).
Here, you have the option to get all you can eat sushi
for 23 bucks plus tax or individual sushi rolls.
The all you can eat sushi deal also includes
appetizers and etc.

Here's the rules for the all you can eat:
-No Take Out
-No Sharing
-Please Finish Everything You Order
-We Will Charge For Leftover Food
-No Sashimi
-Two Rolls or 8 Pieces of Nigiri at a Time,
Order More As You Go.

With that said, we broke our sushi roll eating record by
ordering a total of 10 rolls.

Here are the rolls:

420
Smoked Salmon, Baked Shrimp, Scallop, Scallion.
This wasn't fishy which is good and it was nice and warm.
The only thing is that the scallops would easily fall off.

Some Like It Hot
Tuna Tempura, Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, and Jalapeño.
This is one of our favorites.
It was just like the title says.
Hot jalapeños and a little creamy.

Seafood Delight
Shrimp, Crab, Roe, fish, Scallop, Scallion
This one looks exactly like the 420 but
you can tell the different after the first bite.
Nice and warm and a little fishy.

Scuba
Soft Shell Crab, Salmon, Tuna, Avocado
Another favorite.
Right after the first piece, there was some laughter,
and satisfaction. Soft Shell Crab tasted like crisp bacon.

In the front, we have Firecracker Shrimp.
Spicy Tempura, Shrimp, and avocado.
Very crunchy. Not your typical tempura.
Has different kind of batter that's really good.

In the middle, we have WOW.
Steak, Cream Cheese, Mango, Avocado.
The Wow roll was another favorite.
Cream Cheese+Steak=Awesome.

In the back, we have Tuna Mania.
Spicy Tuna, Pepper Tuna, and Scallion.
Liked the lightly seared tuna on top.

And if you ever wonder what would be like
if a taco was made into a sushi?
Well, here's your answer:

Fiesta
Crab, Avocado, Cucumber, Cilantro, Onion, Jalapeño.
We thought we seen it all.
Big kick we got here.
Another favorite.

Left we have: Sweet Stacy
Sweet Potato, Cream Cheese, Avocado, and Soy Paper.
We can taste the sweetness just a little bit
but it's also spicy. A nice finish.

On the right we have: Chick's Rockin' Roll
Pepper Tuna, Cream Cheese, Topped with
Izumi Tai Spicy Mayo
Warm and creamy.
Tuna tasted just like chicken.

There you have it.
10 Sushi Rolls.
We couldn't move anymore.
That's what happens when you say,
"all you can eat."

If you were to get all these rolls individually,
the price would of been almost 90 dollars.
We got two "all you can eat" deals.
Our bill was 50 bucks total besides the tip.

So, in order to take advantage of their "all you can eat" deal,
you must be very hungry.

Here's some more pics to close this post:

Ka-Prow

Site:
http://www.kaprowleaf.com/

The low budget sushi eating mofos are back.
It's been 7 months since our last post but we're
back with a vengeance.
Our focus once again is to find good quality sushi
at an affordable price.
We hit a few spots that fit that criteria.
The first thing we look for is if they have a sushi happy hour.
That's when we get the most out of our budget.
This month's budget was 50 bucks total for two people.
That's including taxes and tip.

This month we hit up something different.
We went to a Thai restaurant that has a Japanese sushi bar
owned by a Chinese person.
What a mix we have here.

The place is Ka-Prow located in North Austin by I-35 and Howard Lane.

We ordered a total of eight sushi rolls.
That's 64 pieces here (the most we had so far).

And for the first time, we ate one roll before
heading to the next.

The Rainbow Roll

It was good, not great, but good for the first time kick.

Spicy Tuna and Shrimp Tempura

The spicy tuna wasn't that spicy but good flavor.
The Ka-Prow spicy sauce was great which is
their version of spicy mayo.
The Shrimp Tempura had a nice crunch.
Every single piece was crunchy and delicious.
Not special, but typical.

California Roll

We always order the standard California Roll
in every sushi place just to get us more full.
Taste like other California Rolls.

Scallop Roll

The after kick here tasted a little fishy.
This one asked for extra wasabi.

Philly Roll

You can't go wrong with the Philly Roll.
We love that cream cheese.

Caterpillar Roll

This one was a little messy. A lot of avocado.
Some of it fell apart. Still tasted decent.
Strong with wasabi.

And we save the best roll for last:

The Bacon Roll

This was everything plus more than we expected.
Crisp bacon, cream cheese, and some avocado
equals to a match made in heaven.
We should of ordered 6 of these rolls.

Overall, it was filling. The sushi pieces were
small, but that's why we had to order 8 rolls.
First time being served by a female sushi chef.

Wasabi: It was kind of weak.

Sushi Bar Shot:

This place didn't have much decor in it.
It was dark and quiet.

We would like to have this little fish here
in our next roll:

And add Bacon!!

Yanagi

http://www.yanagitx.com/

Located in Southwest Austin, we found a place
that had the best quality sushi for a decent happy hour price.

Let's start things up with the sushi bar:

We sat up here and ordered,
and with the quickness, 3 sushi chefs rolled us up 6 rolls.
The place looks fancy.
The regular prices on the menu were way out of
our league.
Good thing that we did our research and went
during happy hour. We even had our list ready to go.
Just walked in there like we own the place
and dropped the list to our waitress.
"Bring the sake, please.
And extra wasabi."
We literally ordered extra wasabi.
I guess it wasn't as lethal as other places.

Let's get on with the rolls:

We had a few variety.

The favorite:
Tempura Roll
This had a nice meaty mixture but it didn't taste fishy.
A little crunch by some of the veggies.
It was filling and great flavors that made us want more.

Spicy California Roll
The best California roll we've had. A little strong
and was the cheapest on our happy hour menu.
$3.95 for this roll. Beat that cheap quality H.E.B rolls.
Well, to be honest, there's some H.E.B. locations
that make them better than others.
But the point is, something like this would cost
6 to 7 bucks somewhere else.

The Las Vegas Roll
This looks exactly the same as the Tempura Roll.
The difference, this one has cream cheese.
Can't go wrong with cream cheese.
Whoever invented putting cream cheese on sushi
is a true genious.
Fried rolls are always good.
This was the most expensive roll on the happy hour
menu ($6.95).

Above here we have a Philly Roll and to the right is
Spicy Salmon.
The Philly roll hit the nostrils with the wasabi.
Nothing else to say about the Philly,
but it was good.
The Spicy Salmon roll almost killed us.
Just a tad of wasabi was enough to bring a big kick
out that salmon.
Almost had to call an ambulance.
Life flashed before our eyes.
Are we ever going to get to that next roll?

We sure did:

The Crunchy Roll
It was a good idea to try this one after that lethal
spicy salmon roll.
This one had a sweet kick to it.
Not sure what it was.
But, it was nicely balanced.

There you have it.
These were great quality sushi and
they were on the happy hour menu.
We glanced over at the regular menu where
they have like 20 other special rolls.
If we thought we were in heaven
with the rolls on the happy hour menu,
imagine how the others rolls would be like.
Heaven times 300.
But, we're low budget, so we held our head up high
and walked out.

Other Random Pics:

We had sake for the first time
in this sushi adventure.

A gong by the sushi bar.

The soy sauce container.

Final words:
For the price of happy hour, this is the best quality
sushi we've had yet.

Midori

Website: midorisushiaustin.com/
Located in Northwest Austin (on 183 and Anderson Mill).

It's been 3 months and some change since our
last sushi entry.
Basically, we blog our sushi experience everytime
we go to a place we 've never been before.
Since we're on a low budget, one of our main focus is,
to find decent sushi at an affordable price.
So, let's review Midori Sushi.

This place was a little too fancy for us.
But, they gave us a very good presentation.

We sat in the sushi bar and within minutes of ordering,
the sushi chefs got to work on it quickly.
The main chef used a very sharp knife to slice an apple
for the sushi presentation.

Two Favorites:

Midori Boca Raton Roll
(Deep fried roll with smoked salmon,
cream cheese, crab, and special sauce)

Spicy Thai Roll
(Shrimp, jalapeño, cucumber w/ spicy Thai peanut sauce)

The other rolls we tried:

Spicy Tuna Roll

Mango Fandango Roll

Phoenix Roll
Price: $3.50 - $12.00
They have very good specials Mon-Sat from 11am-2:30pm

Comments on sushi:
This was a little expensive.
But, you get what you pay for.
The rolls we tried were awesome except
for the Phoenix Roll.
The Phoenix Roll was a little too fishy.
It was okay, but for the price, should of been a lot better.
Spicy Thai Roll had a nice crunch and kick to it.

Wasabi: Not lethal.

Free Appetizers: You get a nice little bowl of Miso soup.

Random Pics:

There's 3 different seating arrangements:
You can sit at the bar, sit in a regular booth or table,
or in an enclosed table booth where you sit lower.

More Comments:
Well, if you're looking for sushi for a special ocassion,
then this could be a decent option.
The staff was nice (just like other sushi places).
The atmosphere was a little cozy, but the music
sucks. We haven't found a sushi place yet where
they play Asian music.
It's out there somewhere.
As for low budget sushi, this wouldn't be a good place
to get sushi.
